Taking part in the Age 3 years survey

We surveyed families when children were around 9 months, and then again at 2 years, and will continue to follow them up over time when the children are 3, 4 and 5 years old. This is an important time for us to understand how children are developing, and the factors that help them, eventually, to be ready for school.

Who would we like to speak to?

We would like to speak with one parent/guardian, usually the one that spends the most time with the child currently, for about a 70-minute visit at home. The visit involves some fun tasks for the 3-year-old(s) to do, such as listening to a short story, playing some games on a touchscreen, and naming different objects in a picture. It also involves the parent/guardian answering some questions about their child(ren)’s development and family life. We would also like invite the 3-year-old(s) other parent/guardians to complete an online survey.

The Age 3 survey includes questions about:

  • Who lives with you
  • Your child’s personality, language, and health
  • Your childcare arrangements
  • Your use of services
  • Your employment situation
  • Your wellbeing and health

What happens when the Ipsos interviewer comes to visit?

The visit will be relaxed and informal. The Ipsos interviewer will arrange the visit for a date and time that suits you. They will have a tablet computer and follow a set questionnaire. There are no right or wrong answers – we just want to know your views and information about you and your 3-year-old child(ren). You do not have to answer any question if you do not want to. The most important thing is that you answer as accurately and as honestly as possible. You can also stop the interview at any time. If you stop and want to complete the interview later, that is also possible.

What if I am out or busy when the Ipsos interviewer comes to visit?

If you are unable to take part when the Ipsos interviewer calls, they will be happy to arrange a more convenient time.
